OVERVIEW - Skilled Trade Program

The Federal Skilled Trades program is one of the three federal immigration programs administered by the Express Entry system. Like all the Express Entry programs, This is using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank interested applicants against one another, only to invite the most competitive candidates to apply for Canadian permanent residence.

Every year, over half of all immigrants to Canada are skilled workers embraced through economic programs, including the Federal Skilled Trades program. Minimum requirements?

In order to be eligible for this program, a candidate should have at least two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade (or an equivalent amount in part-time). This experience must have been received within the previous 5 years and only takes into account the work experience obtained after an individual has been awarded the certification to practice the trade in their country of residence.
Canada’s National Occupational Classification (NOC) code, describes skilled trades as the following occupation groups:


Major Group: 72: industrial, electrical and construction trades
Major Group: 73: maintenance and equipment operation trades
Major Group: 82: supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture and related production
Major Group: 92: processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors and central control operators
Minor Group: 632: chefs and cooks
Minor Group: 633: butchers and bakers

If someone does have the necessary work experience, they also have to comply with the other eligibility criteria outlined by the this program:

  • Canada Employment Connection

    Hold a valid offer of full-time employment for a position lasting at least 12-months or a certificate of qualification in their skilled trade which is issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial authority.

  • Language

    Achieve a minimum of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 4 on an approved English or French language test.

  • Residence in Canada

    Must plan to live outside of the province of Quebec.

Application Procedure

If any person meets these requirements, they will be able to submit an Express Entry profile to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Submitting an Express Entry profile is not a guarantee that a candidate will receive Canadian permanent residence. After submitting an Express Entry profile candidate will be assigned a CRS score and be taken into consideration in future Express Entry draws for Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence.

Skilled work experience

Skilled trades for the Federal Skilled Trades Program are being organized under these groups of the National Occupational Classification:
The major N.O.C groups are divided into different occupations, and they are all skill type B.
You have to demonstrate that you performed the responsibilities set out in the lead statement of the occupational description in the NOC. This contains all the basic duties and most of the main duties listed. If you don't display that your experience meets the description in the NOC, your application will be refused.
Check NOC code, title and skill type and level for your job. The job experience only matters after you qualified to independently put into practice the occupation.

Education

For the Federal Skilled Trades Program, there is no educational requirement. However, if you want to enhance your rank in the Express Entry pool, there are 2 ways in which you can do this.

  • If you went to school in Canada, you can obtain points for a certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian:
    • High school (Secondary school) or
    • Post-secondary institution
  • or

  • If you have foreign education, you will be able to get points for a completed educational credential, if you have an (ECA) Educational Credential Assessment report for immigration purposes from a designated organization demonstrating that your education is equal to a completed certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian:
    • Secondary institution (high school) or
    • Post-secondary institution

Language ability

You will have to:

  • Meet the minimum score of Canadian Language Benchmark 5 for listening and listening, and Canadian Language Benchmark 4 for writing and reading.
  • Take approved language tests for
    • Reading

    • Speaking
  • Enter the test results in your Express Entry profile
Your language tests are valid for only 2 years after the date of the test results. That must be valid on the day you apply for permanent residence.

Proof of funds

You need to demonstrate that you have sufficient money for you and your family to settle in Canada, unless you

  • Having a valid job offer from an employer in Canada
  • Are presently able to legally work in Canada and

Proof of funds

The amount of money that you need to support your family will depend on the size of your family. To calculate the size of your family you need to include

  • Yourself
  • Your spouse or partner
  • Your dependent children and
  • Your spouse’s dependent children

Add your spouse or dependent children even if they are

  • Permanent residents or Canadian citizens
  • Not coming to Canada with you
